Emotions drive energy
There are many studies that show all peak performers, athletes, managers, musicians, what have you, all experience similar sensations when they are “in the zone”: high physical energy, calm emotions and clearness of thought.

The part of the mind that controls your emotions is the the limbic system. It is a connector between the body and the mind using chemical and neurotransmitters (electrochemical impulses) and hormones.

This limbic system is known as your “old brain” and controls your emotional chemistry, emitting positive chemicals or negative hormones and chemicals, therefore controls your performance.

This is important because your performance is based on your emotional state. When your emotions change, so does your calmness, your clearness of thought and your physical energy.

Your ideal state of emotions to be in is high energy with calmness, that is when you can perform at your best.

You want to keep yourself in that state as often as possible when you need to perform, and be able to put yourself into that state when negative emotions occur. The more you are living out your purpose, the more calm and high energy you will be.

Look at your day to see your natural energy cycles.

When is your energy level highest and calmest? When is it optimum?
 First get up
 Middle AM
 Afternoon
 Evening

You definitely want to schedule your most important meetings or performances during your optimized time period. This can be problemeatic if you are a “night person” and you have to be at work early AM. Often your most productive time slots won’t be till later afternoon. Try to steer meetings to later in the day if this is your optimized time slot.

Maintaining high performance during Stress

You have several ways to react to stress, most of them are “reactive” or “defensive” and may not serve you. You can clam up and withdraw, you can go into a temper tantrum, you can try to avoid it, or you can look at it like it’s a game you want to win!

If you send messages to your Limbic system that you are under stress, it will react by releasing stress homones and going into “survival” mode. You do NOT want this. You want to respond with the inner self-talk that it is a game, you are not threatened, and frame it as a challnge you are enjoying. Then the Limbic system will not release stress hormones, and you will remain calm and not “choke.”

If you respond to stress like this, as a game you want to win, you will put yourself into the same realm with high achievers. By reframing stress as a game, you approach it from a different angle, and it takes the pressure out of it – and puts the fun into it.

It’s all up to you and how you perceive it in your head. By having the right beliefs, you can have the right attitude about how to approach an event.

Your emotions control your attitudes, so by learning to build your belief system to encourage strong control of your emotions, you can easily defuse stressful situations in a positive way.

By changing what you imagine in your mind, you can change your thoughts and thus your emotions. By laughing in a spirit of fun and good-nature, you calm yourself and increase your energy.

It’s all about positive visualization. Instead of “reacting”, gain control! Imagine yourself having energy with calmness when a stress event occurs, imagine enjoying your performance, and you will smoothly sail through your performance. Imagine it is a game, and you are playing to win.

When you feel a stress coming on, just say the words “energy with calmness” and put yourself into your favorite game.

    I’ve been in sales and sales management for 30 years and can relate to your writings..
    You’ve got to keep pumping yourself up..we all have our good and bad days..
