Subby (your subconscious) was created to automatically “protect you”, and handle repeatable automatic functions. It’s only concern is protecting your best interests in the now – the immediate moment. This is what makes any habit so hard to change. I use smoking as an example, but it could be any repeated ingrained habit. For example, if you want to get up early to work on a project, you may need to change staying up late watching TV. If you have been doing this for years, it could prove very difficult.

Subby deals with the present, thus the past and the future are disregarded. It is the master of NOW, instant gratification. It doesn’t understand the past or future, that’s not it’s job. Again, it’s a lot like a puppy. A puppy doesn’t know what it did 10 seconds ago if it was the first time. Subby doesn’t understand the consequences of your smoking, drinking, eating or anger outbursts. It just knows that is what it has always been told you wanted.

Subby is programmed to “protect” itself against change, because it thinks it’s protecting you by staying true to your (bad habits in some cases) rituals. This is how Subby is desiged. Subby stores and replay repeated patterns, so you don’t have to consciously relearn activities you do regularly. When a pattern becomes programmed, like smoking or drinking, it is extremely ingrained as automatic (unconscious).

Once you train Subby to repeat a habit, when the cue or time comes, Subby controls you by creating conflict that you want to resolve. It actually gives your nervous system little micro-electric shocks to do what it wants! This is why junkies get the “shakes” – that is Subby giving you electric shocks to repeat a ritual to do drugs. But Subby is only doing its job!

In the case of nicotine, it is a powerful drug Subby has learned to crave. It’s why Subby will give constant and incessant little micro-electric shocks to jolt you into reaching for that cigarette to get some nicotine. It is only obeying your previous ritual programming as your role of a smoker.

Another function of Subby that is automatic is Subby is an alarm clock. Giving you constant repeated reminders to do something you had earlier programmed it to do. So it is just reminding you to smoke the cigarette, same way it is telling you to brush your teeth or make a left on Main street on the way to work. Subby may really not be “aware” that it is engendering self-destructive behavior.

Subby also responds to many triggers you are not aware of: Let’s say you always smoke a cigarette with coffee. Subby associates coffee with cigarettes. You go into work, pour a cup of coffee, all of a sudden you crave a cigarette. In this case, coffee is a “cue” that triggers Subby to begin a ritual process (reach for a cigarette, go outside, light up, blow out the smoke, flick the ashes, blow smoke rings…etc.) It is these powerful secondary habit cues, deeply engrained in Subby, that make it even harder to stop. Again, Subby is only doing it’s job.

The great thing about this is once you master this process of creating new habits, you can put the very powerful force that is Subby to work for you.
